Starting A Blog
I am starting my own blog and I am trying to decide on a domain name to use. Right now I am between jbotte.com and googlee.org. I like the domain googlee.org but am not sure if people will be thrown off with a name similar to Google, also I am not to sure about the whole idea of a .org. If anyone has suggests please feel free to express them.

Thanks,

John Botte

Hey john, so when i started my blog i had NO IDEA what i was doing--i read this book ZAG about doing what everyone else is NOT doing, and making money at it. So somehow ZaggedEdge popped into my head as a pretty unique handle. That being said, i really wish it was my real name--

my name is not unique in the least bit, so i figured i'd never show up on the search results with the jazz star and pro rally car racer who are also matt wilson's. Well soon enough, if you make your footprint large enough, i'm in the top few pages of search results on a name that i'm 1/10,000,000 of--so thats' the good news

Figure out how you are going to brand yourself and stick with it.

I also have trouble having multiple ventures going on and giving out my biz cards. All in all my advice--brand YOURSELF as yourself, and stick to it. My new biz cards are just going to be my name, my number my @alum.bryant.edu email (becuase i'll always be a bryant alum) and my blog http://zaggededge.com. On the back I can always write what I was referencing, or they can get to ZaggedEdge and pick up a link to any of my ventures that are currently going on.

Hope that helps. Oh yeah, ZaggedEdge is never taken ANYWHERE so that's also key to all of this, I've got it on all social media profiles everywhere, so you've got to keep it consistent.

Great advice Matt, I will try and determine my brand first before settling on a name, my twitter name is jbotte but that's the only place i have it, I will keep thinking.

I also remember reading something by John Chow that knowing what he does now he would never start a blog under his own name. It depends entirely where you go with it. The thing is that if you ever decide to have guest posts, start outsourcing and especially if you sell the blog down the line it could lose it's value as you are the face of it.

Good point Daniel, just that has made me decide to stray away from attaching my name to it. I will have to keep brainstorming

what did you guys think of googlee.org?

hmmm... not sure about the .org is the only thing, other than that it's a cool knockoff, but maybe you want to establish your own brand

yea your right I just need to figure out what I want my brand to be

yea I wouldn't go with the googlee.org just because of the similarities with Google. I think you might find it amazing/annoying how many questions you would get from people asking if you were affiliated with google haha.

jbotte.com or johnbotte.com are always good choices. Simple is best.

1 more thought on googlee being bad...people won't always remember how to spell your domain name so you want to try and get it to show up in searches with a couple different spellings. I don't think there will be many ways people can mis-spell googlee and not get a million results related to google before your blog would show up.

i would totally go with jbotte.com. sounds so fresh. it's an easy name to brand and create a unique identity. what i would do though, if googlee.org is available - just buy that and have it redirected to jbotte.com. i'm surprised that domain name is out there. capitalize on it now.
