Let's Talk Private Equity

I recently had the opportunity to interview the chairman of a mid-level private equity firm. Here's what he had to say about private equity, business degrees, and people skills.

Q: How did you find your way into this business?

A: I started my career as an attorney working on numerous types of mergers and acquisitions. I brought one of my clients into a deal based on my judgment and in turn made them about $350 million dollars. Soon after they asked me if I would be interested in starting a p… Continue

Marketing in an Economic Downturn

CHICAGO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--

According to a recent American Marketing Association (AMA) www.marketingpower.com survey, 60 percent of AMA member marketers believe that halting or reducing spending on key marketing programs is the biggest mistake marketers can make in an economic downturn. Marketers also report that focusing on short-term tactics and sticking to the status quo are some additional missteps marketers make.

“Our survey reinforces that these are challenging times to be a marketer,” sa… Continue

I want to start a speaker bureau, which is the middleman between speakers and conferences / companies / colleges that hire speakers. They do all the planning for the conference from the speaker contract to the travel arrangements, making money by taking commission. Speaker fees range anywhere from a couple grand to 100k +, with the industry-standard commission being about 25%.

It'd be amazing networking, too, of course - working with speakers and conferences, companies, etc.

How about you, what are your plans for Tangent?

Hey thanks! I tend to "double-dip" my class assignments with anything entrepreneurship - related, so I've been doing research and finding a lot of great stuff... haha. Hopefully I can also convince my marketing group next semester to do marketing research on the company I want to start. ;)
